Distress Tolerance Tools
As we are moving through the winter season, many people find it difficult to stay positive, energized, and encouraged. The shorter days and longer nights can take a significant toll on our emotional well-being. Since beginning my journey as a counselor, I have gained a deeper understanding of how heavily this time of year can weigh on individuals.
I am continually searching for ways to support myself, my family, and my clients as we navigate seasons of life that may bring feelings of depression, weariness, anxiety, or discouragement. While we wait for the cold months to give way to warmer days, longer sunlight, and more time outdoors, I have found it helpful to remind myself that challenging seasons are not a sign of weakness. Instead, they can serve as opportunities for growth, self-exploration, and learning skills that help us endure difficult moments.
Recently, I came across a YouTube video discussing Distress Tolerance skills, and I felt it could be a valuable resource for others. These practical coping strategies can be especially helpful when we feel distressed, uncomfortable, or overwhelmed. The video not only explains what is happening in our bodies when we are stressed or anxious but includes several techniques that have been proven helpful in navigating symptoms.
I encourage you to remember that seasons do not last forever. We are not meant to walk through life’s difficult moments alone—God provides strength and tools to help us through.
I will leave you with this reminder from Psalm 27:14:
“Hope in Yahweh; be strong, and let your heart take courage; hope in Yahweh.”
