Why Choose Journey Counseling

About Journey

Journey Counseling Ministries opened its doors in 2008 with the purpose of serving and ministering to Harrisonburg’s local churches as well as the individuals and families in the greater community. The clinic’s founder, John F. Kuebler, envisioned Journey to bear specific qualities.

The clinic’s foundation is based upon Christ and Biblical principles and standards. All of us, therapists and clinicians, are formally trained from accredited seminaries, colleges, and universities. Journey is a not-for-profit (501(c)3) organization and is overseen by a Board of Directors. Lastly, our clinic offers financial support on a case-by-case basis through Journey’s Client Assistance Funds as funds are available.

Our team offers the following types of counseling services.

  • Individual or group counseling (includes anger management)

  • Children and youth counseling services

  • Pre-engagement and pre-marital counseling

  • Marriage counseling

  • Family counseling

  • Workshops and seminars to the community

We collaborate with Employee Assistance Programs.

Our Offerings

We maintain membership with the American Association of Christian Counseling. We use the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders to diagnosis and classify the many areas of mental health. All of us receive weekly supervision. Our therapists fulfill requirements for continuing education to maintain licensure. Each of us regularly attends professional development training in our fields of interest and especially in counseling ethical standards.

Our Professionalism

Our Beliefs

We believe in:

  • The authority and inerrancy of Scripture

  • The Trinity

  • The Creation of Man

  • The Fall and Sin of Mankind

  • Jesus Christ – fully God and fully sinless man, and the need for his crucifixion

  • Justification and Sanctification

Our Alignment

We align ourselves with and fully accept the Statement of Faith from the American Association of Christian Counselors.

The AACC Statement of Faith:

There exists only one God, creator and sustainer of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally co-existing in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Scriptures, both Old and New testaments, are the inspired, inerrant and trustworthy Word of God, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of human beings, and the final authority for all matters about which it speaks. Human nature derives from two historical personas, male and female, created in God’s image. They were created perfect, but they sinned, plunging themselves and all human beings into sin, guilt, suffering, and death.

The substitutionary death of Jesus Christ and his bodily resurrection provide the only ground for justification, forgiveness, and salvation for all who believe. Only those who trust in Him alone are born of the Holy Spirit and are true members of the Church; only they will spend eternity with Christ. The Holy Spirit is the agent of regeneration and renewal for believers in Jesus Christ. He makes the presence of Jesus Christ real in believers, and He comforts, guides, convicts, and enables believers to live in ways that honor Christ. Ministry to persons acknowledges the complexity of humans as physical, social, psychological, and spiritual beings. The ultimate goal of Christian counseling is to help others move to personal wholeness, interpersonal competence, mental stability, and spiritual maturity.

Getting Started

Thank you for reaching out and pursuing counseling with us.  The first step is to read about our counselors and choose someone to contact directly.  We all make our own appointments.  You can find our contact information listed on our bios.

Once you have made an appointment, we ask our clients to download, print, and fill out the correct intake forms (linked below) before the initial session. Bring the intake forms with you to your first appointment.

This helps both you and your clinician maximize your time together.

As you and your clinician work through the counseling process, it may become important to contact one or more outside parties, such as family members, spouses, general medical doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, and pastors.  If this becomes necessary, you will have the opportunity to talk with your counselor about the Release of Information form and fill one out in session.

We also understand that household incomes vary from person to person. Please ask your clinician if you believe you need financial support for counseling.
