When Shyness Is More Than Shyness: Understanding Social Anxiety in Teen Girls
Written by Ally Padilla, MA, LPC Clinical Director
Adolescence is filled with new experiences—new friendships, changing schools, sports, youth groups, first jobs, and increasing independence. Feeling nervous in these situations is completely normal. Most teens experience butterflies before giving a presentation, walking into a new classroom, or meeting new people.
But for some girls, those nervous feelings become much bigger than occasional jitters.
They begin avoiding social situations altogether. They replay conversations over and over in their minds. They assume everyone is judging them. They believe they're awkward, unlikeable, or simply "not enough."
If this sounds familiar, your daughter or loved one may be struggling with social anxiety.
Social anxiety is more than being shy—it's an intense fear of being embarrassed, rejected, or negatively evaluated by others. Left unchecked, anxiety often leads to avoidance, making fears grow over time and limiting opportunities for meaningful relationships and experiences.
The good news is this: there is hope.
Scripture reminds us that God often calls people who feel inadequate. When Moses questioned whether he was capable of leading Israel, God didn't tell him to become more confident. Instead, He simply said, "I will be with you" (Exodus 3:12). Likewise, Peter stepped out of the boat while the storm was still raging. Courage wasn't the absence of fear—it was trusting Jesus enough to take the next faithful step.
Introducing Brave Together
Brave Together: Finding Confidence, Connection, and Courage Through Christ is a five-week counseling group for girls ages 13–17 who struggle with social anxiety, self-doubt, fear of rejection, or negative self-talk.
Through engaging activities, biblical teaching, and evidence-based counseling strategies, participants will learn to:
Understand and manage social anxiety
Challenge negative self-talk
Practice courageous social steps
Build healthy friendships
Strengthen their identity in Christ
Our goal isn't to eliminate fear—it's to help teen girls discover that their confidence is rooted not in what others think of them, but in who God says they are. As they learn practical skills and take small, courageous steps, they'll discover they don't have to face anxiety alone.
"Be strong and courageous...for the Lord your God goes with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9
